Property Description
Have you ever dreamed of restoring a historic home to its original grandeur? Here's your chance, this Spectacular Victorian on the beautiful tree lined S. Broad St. in Kennett Square is waiting for you! The stone front porch will be the envy of the neighborhood and the views from the upper floors can't be beat. This house has so much to offer along with an extensive history. The house was built in 1858 by John J. Woodward and is on the National Historic Register. It is officially known as "The John J. Woodward House." (There's a plaque to that effect by the front door.) Mr. Taft, owner of the American Farm Machinery Company then operating in Kennett Square, bought it in 1888. He is responsible for adding all of the Victorian gingerbread, the wrap-around porch, the third story and attic crawl space, and the family room addition on the back--work completed 1891 (written on chimney). Clara Taft (born there in 1893) married Dr. Ulysses Grant Gifford in 1931. Dr. Gifford had brought her into the world and rented/used part of the first floor as a medical office from 1915 until his death in 1941. He is responsible for adding on the two small examining rooms and bathroom on the left side of the house, completed circa 1935. Clara Taft Gifford lived in the house until her own death in 1981, when our parents bought the property. It is still known around Kennett as "The Gifford House"--because Clara Taft Gifford lived there such a very long time. There is a detached garage with an apartment on the upper level. This House is being sold as-is.
